Over 2.7 million children nationwide currently have at least one parent incarcerated, while it is estimated that over 10 million people have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives. The resultant trauma, disruption, shame and stigma associated with parental incarceration combines to create adverse childhood experiences. We seek to offer these young people a safe place to go after school for academic support, mentoring and inspiration. We have served over 9000 students living in high-risk communities and exposed to multiple risk factors including parental incarceration.
Each school year, the Dream Academy provides robust afterschool programs and weekly mentoring to over 700 students in grades 2 - 12 in partnership with local public or charter schools in Baltimore, Houston, Indianapolis, Orlando, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C.
